Research Synopsis

Goal 1 (Thrust 1). Innovating NextG Networking to Leverage Diversity & AI. We advance an innovative semantics-guided, (truly) cross-layer and cross-system NextG networking framework to meet the stringent requirements (C1) of future Industrial 4.0 applications. We will use AV teleoperations as a driving use case, as it poses extreme challenges such as high bandwidth, low latency and mobility.

Goal 2 (Thrust 2). Agile, Secure Edge Support for AI-Assisted Teleoperations. We will develop agile and secure-by-design edge systems that provide dynamic support for AI workloads and enable flexible end-network-edge cooperation for human-centered teleoperations.

Goal 3 (Thrust 3). Human-Centered Designs with Human-Machine Intelligence. We will conduct comprehensive human-centered studies to understand and quantify the impact of various human factors on human-machine interaction and human-human coordination in (collective) remote control of AVs, and develop innovative models that combine machine and human intelligence to assist human operators for safe, trustworthy and scalable teleoperations.

Goal 4 (Thrust 4). Integration, Experimentation, Evaluation and Demonstration. We will build a comprehensive platform, NextMOVE to provide resilient and safety-critical support for (partially) teleoperated AVs. We will comprehensively and systematically validate NextMOVE through a combination of simulation/emulation methods, wireless testbeds and "real-world" test track facilities under various naturalistic and adversarial settings.
